Moving Insurance
Back to Articles
When the decision to hire a moving company has been reached, it is important to realize that no matter how reputable the company, accidents happen. When these accidents occur, it is important that you have valid insurance over your belongings.
When making a claim with a moving company, the claim must be filed within nine months of the incident, although, the damage should be reported as soon as possible to the moving company. It is important to take an inventory of the moved items after everything has been unpacked.
When acknowledging a claim, the moving company must acknowledge a complaint within thirty days and within one hundred twenty days must deny or accept the claim.
There are three types of additional insurance that are available for purchase from the moving company. These three types are:
Declared Value
Often, when creating a value of the shipment the moving company gives value to each pound of the shipment. This shipment total is than tallied, and the declared value is calculated. The settlement is than based on the depreciation of the value of the items moved.
Lump Sum Value
A bill of lading must be declared for items of extraordinary value. These items may be ensured for a certain value per thousand dollars. This will require specification in the bill of lading.
Full Value Protection
Full value protections involve lost, damages, stolen or destroyed property. There is often a minimum value effect in place, and it is important to note the value and details of your items.
When choosing insurance it is important to think about cost, and volume. Is it worth the risk to ship valuable items? Is there a risk of damage? The next step in obtaining insurance is to note the value of all goods that are being moved furniture, and moving boxes alike.
Inform the moving company of special items that should be loaded with care such as fine art, antiques and mirrors. Take an inventory of all items, with photos to ensure coverage if a claim is required. Be sure to note total value, weight and availability of replacement.
When choosing a moving company be sure to ask what insurance is provided with the moving package. A simple phone call can reveal the value at which insurance covers; this is the answer that will determine the amount of additional insurance that you will require.
