How To Pack Dishes
Back to Articles
China if often precious, as it is handed down from generation to generation. Not many people are aware of the proper way to pack china and crystal into moving boxes.
Plates should be packed with ease. The bottoms of the moving box should be lined with bubble wrap or foam pieces. Take one plate from the stack that you are trying to pack, and place it on a pile of paper, or tissue. Fold four or five pieces of the tissue or paper around the plate, to cover the entire plate. Stack the second plate, and again, cover the entire plate with paper. When you have a stack of four to six plates, cover the entire stack with paper, and seal with packing tape.
In the instance of fragile or antique plates use bubble wrap as an alternative to paper ensuring that the plates will arrive safe within their moving box.
While packing large plates, smaller stacks create a less fragile package. While packing smaller plates, you could create more of a stack, and place it into the medium size box. Ensure that the box is tightly filled with bubble wrap or foam pieces.
Packing glasses, cups and stemware can be difficult. Many have moved and packed tightly only to discover that stemware is the most fragile. Once you lose one piece of stemware, breaking the set it is difficult to find a replacement for the set.
To pack stemware, begin with a moving box filled with foam pieces, be sure to crumple paper and stuff the glasses with the paper. Roll the stemware, covering it with the packing paper from the corner. Fragile stemware should be placed in an upright position with the warning, fragile, on the outside of the moving box.
While packing mugs into moving boxes place a mug in the center of the pile of papers. Pull all corners up, and into the mug. Place another mug to the top; they should nestle into each other easily.
