Important Questions to ask your Movers
Back to Articles
There are a few important questions that should be asked of the moving company before you decide to hire them to move your belongings. These questions could save a lot of work with insurance claims and hassle, should anything go wrong. The important questions are often the questions that get overlooked.
What is the registration number of the moving company?
Every US moving company should have a USDOT Moving registration number. A United States Department of Transportation number is necessary for moving companies travelling from state to state.
Are there any additional fees involved in the move?
It is a good idea to check if there are extra fees involved with gasoline or taxes if you are travelling outside of the country.
Are there any fees for additional transfers?
Transfers sometimes occur when a large moving company has to switch trucks, or hires a sub contractor. It is a good idea to check if there are fees for this, or if it will be included in the quote for your move.
What costs are involved with extra labour time?
Some companies have an hourly rate for extra hours incurred in packing, unpacking or driving. You will want to make sure of these rates as to not have any unpleasant surprises when it comes time to pay the bill.
Some companies charge for large, or hard to move items or transportation should the moving van not fit into the residence, or if there are many flights of stairs to be travelled. It is important to ask these questions ahead of time to avoid any difficulties.
What packing services are included with the quote?
Often, discount packing supplies can be purchased at a special rate with the cost of your move. Packing and unpacking is generally involved in the moving quote but could vary for extra time, and larger items.
Does the moving company use temps or sub contractors?
When you hire a moving company, and checking references you are checking the references and researching only that moving company. If the company uses any temporary help or subcontractors it is important to check the reputation of those companies as well. It is crucial to check the records of the drivers, and the packers to ensure that your service will be satisfactory. This information should be readily given to you, as a customer.
