Monday, November 30th, 2009

home_moving_companyNaturally, you wish the items to be safe till it arrives at your door step. Poor quality in packing boxes can damage your items while shipping the goods. Check with the company about the precautions they take while packing and the details of the moving supplies they use. Well sized moving boxes and other essential moving supplies keep the belongings safe from knocks, breaks and scratches. Even if the bill is high, it will be worthwhile if you can ensure the quality of transportation.

Several companies charge extra for the special moving supplies they use to protect the goods. In that context, it will be nice if you understand the basics of packing and moving.  If needed, you may even purchase the moving supplies to minimize the expense. Believe me, packing is the most intricate step when you transport the goods. If you know how to pack your items neatly, you can ship the package yourself. For moving very little items, you can do the whole exercise by getting affordable materials from the nearby stores.

boxes for moving are an essential part of the moving supplies. They come in varying sizes suitable to pack different household items. For other large, fragile items and those with weird shapes, you may need special moving boxes. Purchasing the right moving supplies including bubble wraps, permanent markers, cardboard boxes and sealing tapes can secure most of the items. Frame protectors and ribbed cardboard boxes can be safely used to pack large breakable objects. If the situation demands, you can make the purchase from your local moving retailers or even online.

The time required for moving things to the new site varies for different companies.  Make certain that your goods are delivered in time.

Moving on a Budget

moving boxes and supplies budget

Some great ideas when moving with a tight budget is to use old bed sheets, blankets and linen for cushioning breakable items. I actually got this idea from watching a movie on the television where this lady was being evacuated from her house and she had to quickly pack her stuff; she just wrapped up her plates and cups in bed sheets and blankets. Ah, inspiration can come from anywhere.

Another simple way to save on moving supplies is to get your packing peanuts from your local electrical supplies shop. They usually have these packing peanuts in bulk and if you just get a little from a few stores, you will have ample for your own use. You could also start saving from when you purchase electrical items but I dont  think, moving is something we plan for, at all.

So there you have it; my simple suggestions on how you can save on moving supplies and moving boxes based on my experience of moving not so long ago. I hope these ideas trigger your creative juices to come up with even more creative ones and perhaps, you can also share them here in this column and with your friends.

Relocating and Moving Supplies

Monday, November 30th, 2009

moveRelocation to a new place necessitates packing all bits and pieces and getting it transported to the new place. Tremendous physical effort is needed to transport the belongings. Packing the items ranging from the most delicate stuff to the heftiest things require special packing materials, moving boxes and above all, so much patience. Professional packers and movers can do the task easily and affordably using good quality moving supplies.

It is quite easy to find out the moving companies near to your location. These people put their advertisements online as well as in the local newspapers. Many times, they offer special discounted prices while transferring items as a bulk. You might have wondered how they manage to move things at an affordable price. The reason is very clear; they have branches in many places and the wide network enables them to carry out the service quickly and affordably.

Be aware of their terms and conditions and take the time to go through all the papers. Some of the agencies require a registration fee before they undertake the task of transporting goods to the destination. Along with the cost of transportation, you may encounter some hidden costs later which can lead to arguments. To get a better understanding of their services and the quality of the moving supplies, the best way is to enquire with their old customers. In the case of companies with an online identity, the user reviews will guide you in assessing their quality of service.

How to Save on Moving Supplies?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

suppliesWe moved to a bigger house late last year. I was running around like a mad dog getting everything done but in the process, I managed to learn some valuable lessons on moving. Here, I would like to share with you on how to save on moving supplies which can turn out to be a huge expense if you’re not careful. I have to thank my neighbors and friends as well who helped me with some of these ideas and took it upon themselves to be my helper while I was moving.

Moving boxes are a major moving supply that you will need to store away your things and the ones that you will be taking with you to your new home. Boxes for moving come in all shapes and prices. I saved a lot of money by getting most if not all from my neighbors, the nearby stores and the hypermarket, where I normally shop. A friend of mine took me to a liquor shop to get some cardboard boxes as it throws away the boxes in which the bottles come in as they don’t need it anymore after that. What a find! In the end, I even had extra boxes which I turned into cash at the local recycling booth located near my house.

You can also save on moving supplies such as packing tape, markers and ropes by either purchasing it in bulk or like me, just ask each of your friends to bring one item each when they come to help you pack. Trust me, this is the much cheaper option and your friends can ask you the same favor back when it is their time to move. It can also be a fun experience, packing with your friends and family as items in your household probably hold a story for each of them and it will be a good time to reminisce.

Using Cardboard Boxes within your Moving Boxes

Yes its true that moving boxes are tough and will protect the content that you place within them very well. That’s not to say that using additional cardboard boxes within your moving boxes is a bad idea.
Using these additional cardboard boxes in your current moving boxes can provide you with 2 things:

1)   Added protection to the item or items you have placed inside your moving boxes from other items in the box.

2)   Keeping your items neat and contained in one place, because during your move items do sometimes move around in the box.

You can find cardboard boxes of all shapes and sizes in your home to use, all you have to do is be creative and look. Some easy ideas to get you thinking are:

1)   Cereal boxes or other snacks like crackers or chips

1 a)   Pringle chip cans

1 b)   Mcdonald Happy Meal box

1 c)  Pizza box (make sure its clean)

2)   Sneaker boxes

3)   Shoe boxes

4)   Cardboard boxes of soda fridge packs

5)   Packages in mail

6)   Cigar boxes

7)   Gift boxes

8)   Empty cardboard cases of fruit

9)   Electronic boxes

10)  Empty toy packages

Just remember most of these cardboard boxes are designed to look pretty and not provide maximum protection, so be sure to use them with additional moving supplies such as bubble wrap and packing paper if the content you place within them is valuable.

Use Plastic bottles for Packing with your moving boxes

plastic-bottle

During packing your stuff into moving boxes you will come across items that are small and need to be contained(examples below). For this we can use 16 oz (or smaller) plastic bottles of water or soda.

2 Great benefits of using plastic bottles for packing small items:

1) its not breakable and when the cap is on tight its almost impossible to crush.

2) doing something good for the environment by reusing plastic creatively.

Some useful stuff to packing into Plastic bottles:

1) Art stuff such as: beads, glitter, pins, safely pins.

2) Office stuff such as:  paper clips , thumbtack, rubber bands( put around outside of bottle)

3) Kitchen stuff such as: Salt, pepper and other spices.

3a) Other Kitchen Stuff  for example: If you have large bottles of cooking oil put them in smaller bottles so you will save space in your moving boxes

4) Personal stuff such as: braclets, necklace, charms. Clear bottles work best so you can see what is inside. Also if its very valuable it would be best to keep on you during your move.

Before you start packing for your move make sure to save a few plastic bottles to be part of your moving supplies that you have.
