Consider making your moving boxes do double duty. For example, instead of filling a moving box with towels, use them to wrap dishes or other breakable items. Blankets can be used to pad mirrors, while dish clothes work well for small figurines. When packing boxes in a kitchen, do not place plates and platters flat in the box. Instead, cushion them by wrapping first and then stand them on edge in the box. They are less likely to break in this position than if they are placed flat.
The best way to pack up a house is to use the proper size box for the contents. Moving boxes of books should be kept small, say twelve inches high by twelve inches wide and eighteen inches long. It is amazing how heavy a box of books can be, and too large a box makes it hard to move. Book boxes, and others that will contain heavy items, should be reinforced with moving supplies such as tape; having the bottom give way when you’re trying to move the box is no fun, particularly if the load lands on your foot.
Some people find that the best way to pack up a house is to make a party of it. Break out the chips and dip, put on some music, and try to have a little fun along the way.
