Moving 101

basicIf you’re planning a move, you need to take a minute to determine the best way to pack up a house. The first thing to do is evaluate the task ahead of you.  Take a good look at what is going to need to be packed into moving boxes.  Open cabinets, closets, and drawers to see not only the quantity, but the type of items, you are going to need to pack.

Then assemble your moving supplies, such as tape, packing boxes, and wrapping material.  Moving boxes and bubble wrap from a professional mover’s may be the best way to pack up a house, but there are more economical items that will serve the purpose.  The boxes that copy paper are packed in make good moving boxes, and you may be able to obtain some other sizes through the local grocery store.  Many of these have certain days or times that they put boxes out for the public, so you might want to call ahead of time.  Save up your newspapers to use as wrappers for fragile items; paper and plastic bags can also be used.

The best way to pack up a house is to clear one room at a time.  Before you start, set aside anything in that room that you absolutely, positively, do not want packed.  Then make some space in one corner to use as a staging area, and working from that same corner, work your way methodically around the room.  When finished, proceed to the next room and repeat.

If you have plenty of time before moving day, the best way to pack up a house might be to do it gradually.  First, set up a staging area where you can place cardboard boxes and moving supplies out of the way as you fill them.  Next, pack up those items that are seldom used, such as the china or out of season clothing and before you know it, you’re well on your way to being done.
